SUMMARY:The Graveyard Shift: A Horror Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is open to everyone fond of the horror genre\, whether they have written about it before or this is their first time. Attendees are welcome to bring pre-existing work\, whether it be poetry or fiction\, but prompts will also be provided for first timers. Make sure to bring pen/pencils\, notebooks\, laptops\, or whatever you can write with! Presented by Lizzie Van Bakel. \nIf you would like to attend this event\, please register here.  \nPlease note: This is hosted at the Integris building\, in the Wheatley Community Room. \nAbout Lizzie: \nI have been writing since I was in grade 12 but did not start writing horror until I took a creative writing class at CNC. Horror has always been a genre that interested me and once I started writing in the genre\, I never wanted to leave. I recently received news that three of my poems will be published in a dark horror poetry anthology called Beautiful Tragedies 5\, published by Hellbound Books. I hope to create a horror writing community and create a space where we can share some scary stories all year around. I’m very excited about this and can’t wait to meet some more writers.

SUMMARY:Comedic Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“So you think you’re funny?” \nHumour is a great thing. Some are born with it\, but sometimes it takes practice and refinement. Humour can also be subjective which can make it difficult to nail down – what makes something funny? Is it timing? Word choice? Like other forms of writing\, comedic writing comes with its own challenges\, but techniques as well. Whether it’s strictly on paper or eventually performed on stage\, comedic writing is a unique art form. \nThe Northern BC Writer’s Association is excited to host a comedic writing workshop. This informal panel consists of local stand-up comedians\, including Kylie Lewis-Holt\, Dale Erhstien\, Mark Wheeler\, and the NBCWA’s own Devon Flynn. The workshop is not limited to stand-up comedians\, but anyone interested in learning how to inject humor into writing and discussing what makes something funny on and off paper. \nPlease register for the event here to attend. \nYou’ve probably seen Devon around. As a multi-talented guy\, he’s involved in a little bit of everything around Prince George. He’s a playwright\, actor\, DJ\, is back in school to become a care aide\, and of course\, is also a writer. His passion for encouraging others to find their words is what prompted him (with the help of some amazing others) to develop the first Northern BC Writer’s Festival. He finds the humor in the whacky and banal\, and everywhere in between. Hoping to wrestle it out of life situations like a mutant worm in the ground minding its own business\, Devon is part of a panel of PG funny folk July 8th\, 6-8pm.

SUMMARY:Meet Reality Skimming Press
DESCRIPTION:Find out how you can get involved\, with a range of activities open to: writers\, artists\, fans\, and other creatives in Prince George\, associated with Reality Skimming Press. \nWe’ll pitch the existing opportunities\, run breakout groups to develop ideas\, and schedule appointments for further discussion with interested creatives. Reality Skimming Press depends on the talents of half a dozen people to continue expanding the reach of the Okal Rel Universe via multiple media and modes. It also maintains an active blog featuring articles by contributors and plans to publish at least 1 non-ORU work of SF in 2026. \nRelSkim Writers is a local writers group for serious writers of all kinds\, sponsored by Reality Skimming Press\, that meets twice a month to read works-in-progress aloud to each other\, and plan occasional events. A short introduction to your options will be followed by breakout groups where you can sample the RelSkim Writers experience\, or develop ideas / roles related to the 2026 goals for Reality Skimming Press. Bring a five-minute reading of something of your own work if you wish to participate in the RelSkim Writer’s break-out. \nPlease register here to confirm attendance and save your spot. \nAbout the presenters: \nLynda Williams is the publisher at Reality Skimming press\, author of the Okal Rel Saga decalogy and founder of the associated Okal Rel Universe (ORU) with over 20 contributors in the realm of art\, fiction and even voice acting. Google “Okal Rel” for a glimpse of the ORU. Reality Skimming Press also publishes the occasional anthology and hosts a blog with guest contributors. The press is ramping up on multiple fronts in 2026 and looking for people interested in playing a role. In addition to her literary adventures\, Lynda taught applied computing\, founded a freenet\, raised three daughters and is now a pet parent and grandmother. Reality Skimming Press is on facebook at https://facebook.com/relskim and online at https://realityskimming.com. \n Chelsea is a Métis writer and educator based in northern British Columbia. She writes when the spirit moves her\, while balancing multiple jobs\, being a cat parent to two distinctly human felines\, and tending life in her garden. Her creative nonfiction lingers with place\, memory\, environmental grief\, relational care\, and the strange textures of everyday life. Her work has appeared in We Make the Village: An Anthology of Community\, the zine Tending the Wild: Vol. 3\, and through the Early Childhood Pedagogy Network and the Reality Skimming Press Blog. She is currently at work on a growing body of essays and stories circling foxes\, midlife\, northern landscapes\, and the uncanny. She also keeps circling a tech-horror novella that feels increasingly difficult to finish as the premise edges closer to reality. Her Substack\, https://chelseahann.substack.com\, is a growing collection of half-thoughts\, essay experiments\, and candid retellings of everyday life.

SUMMARY:Becoming the Author of your Own Life
DESCRIPTION:We all have a story — but sometimes that story gets lost in translation\, buried under fear\, or hidden behind silence. Elisha Rose brings: Becoming the Author of Your Life to the Northern BC Writers Festival: a powerful\, intimate workshop designed for anyone who has ever wondered what it might feel like to finally say\, this is my truth\, and I’m not ashamed of it. \nParticipants will explore the weight of untold stories — why we hold them back\, what it costs us to keep them hidden\, and what becomes possible when we choose to share them. This workshop will create a brave\, raw space where participants can sit with the hard questions together: \nWhat does sharing your truth really mean to you?\nWhat are you afraid it will cost you?\nAnd what are you losing by staying silent? \nThrough guided writing prompts\, open conversation\, and the rawness and warmth that Elisha brings in her work\, participants will leave with the courage to begin. This workshop would be for aspiring writers\, seasoned storytellers\, survivors\, dreamers\, and anyone who has ever felt like their story doesn’t deserve to be told. \nPlease register for the event here.  \nFrom Elisha Rose: \nI have published two books that are now available on Amazon\, at Books and Company in Prince George\, the Prince George Public Library\, and at Artisantique in Terrace. I Am Worthy and Time to Wake Up My Love are my two non-fiction memoirs and they are the most honest things I have ever done. In them\, I share my story of losing my partner to addiction\, healing from my own\, and walking through the fire of low self-worth\, motherhood\, grief\, sexual assault\, and female rage. \nWhen I chose to share my story\, I lost people close to me but it was the best decision I have ever made\, and I would make it again. That experience is exactly why this workshop matters so deeply to me. \nIn 2024\, I had the honour of receiving an International Impact Award in the categories of Autobiography\, Grief\, Inspirational and Memoir\, and travelled to Phoenix\, Arizona for the awards ceremony. That same year\, I received an Honourable Mention at the LA Times Festival of Books for General Nonfiction. In 2025\, I was named a Finalist for Author of the Year through the International Impact Awards and was invited to sit on a panel at the Vancouver International Publishing Conference on a topic very close to my heart: Is Writing the Tough Stuff Worth It? Beyond the page\, I have had the privilege of serving as a keynote speaker for Witset First Nation at their Overdose Awareness Event and for Positive Living North. I speak weekly at AWAC\, the Association Advocating for Women and Community here in Prince George\, and I host a book club at the Prince George Regional Correctional Facility. I have also begun facilitating my own workshops under the Becoming series\, including Becoming Confident\, and I have an upcoming retreat called Becoming Resilient taking place at Fir Haven on June 5th\, 2026. I know firsthand what it costs to speak your truth and I know what it gives back. I am so excited for the opportunity to sit with other writers in that exact question and help them find their own answer.

SUMMARY:Bringing Characters To Life: How To Make Compelling Player Characters For D&D And Other TTRPGs
DESCRIPTION:It’s easy to make a D&D character. Pick a name\, roll some stats\, choose a personality trait or two\, and give them a funny voice. While there’s nothing wrong with this simple approach\, it often leads to characters feeling flat. This workshop is for anyone who wants to take their D&D characters to the next level. Compelling characters feel real. They have depth. They grow as the story unfolds and the world changes them. If you look past the magical powers and vibrant skin colours\, they can feel like real people.\nIn Bringing Characters To Life\, you’ll be guided through making your own compelling character by a D&D veteran. You’ll be shown the ways how making and playing a D&D character is different from writing a story on your own\, and the character you create will reflect that. Once you’ve made your character\, they’ll be thrust into a party of other such characters\, wherein you’ll find how well they all get along\, work together\, and change each other. \nThis panel is led by Ryan Van Aalst\, long time D&D player and Dungeon Master. He started playing in high school with some online friends and has been enjoying the hobby ever since. He is an avid believer in the power of putting his characters\, and his players\, in torturous and heart-wrenching situations for the sake of character growth and good storytelling. With more than a decade of DM-ing experience under his belt\, Ryan looks forward to sharing his knowledge and passion for tabletop roleplaying with all who attend. \nTo attend this event\, please register here.

SUMMARY:So\, You Wanna Be a Poet
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on freewriting (the fun part) using “prompts” to get the creative juices flowing\, followed by a framework for editing (the tear your hair out part) to reframe and fine tune your first drafts into something that can be submitted for publication with Confidence. \nWhat to bring: pens (two because it’s embarrassing when your pen runs out of ink in the middle of a workshop) a pencil (for editing) and paper I used to provide this but\, have you priced out legal pads lately?)\, your own coffee mug (full)\, *Optional* Bring some original work you may want to edit. (something you think has potential but isn’t there yet) \nWhat you will get out of it: \n1: A chance to work with a collaborative group of other writers\, supporting each other in developing your craft (as opposed to it being just you\, your laptop and a bag of chips. You know who you are!) \n2: Some interesting insight into finding inspiration and a usable creative process to generate rough drafts of poetic work. (prompts\, such as\, “Write something you would never want your mom to read”) \n3: Editing tips and techniques How to workshop a poem with others. How to comment on the poetry of others in ways that are useful\, respectful and help you to improve your own work. (Do NOT say “This poem sucks”\, unless it is a poem about a vacuum cleaner) \nPlease register for this workshop here.  \nHosted at the Connections Wellness Centre. \nAbout the presenter: \nAndrew J Burton MS Ed(FA) is an award-winning writer\, theatre artist and poet with many years of experience in a range of writing practices.
