SUMMARY:Bringing Characters To Life: How To Make Compelling Player Characters For D&D And Other TTRPGs
DESCRIPTION:It’s easy to make a D&D character. Pick a name\, roll some stats\, choose a personality trait or two\, and give them a funny voice. While there’s nothing wrong with this simple approach\, it often leads to characters feeling flat. This workshop is for anyone who wants to take their D&D characters to the next level. Compelling characters feel real. They have depth. They grow as the story unfolds and the world changes them. If you look past the magical powers and vibrant skin colours\, they can feel like real people.\nIn Bringing Characters To Life\, you’ll be guided through making your own compelling character by a D&D veteran. You’ll be shown the ways how making and playing a D&D character is different from writing a story on your own\, and the character you create will reflect that. Once you’ve made your character\, they’ll be thrust into a party of other such characters\, wherein you’ll find how well they all get along\, work together\, and change each other. \nThis panel is led by Ryan Van Aalst\, long time D&D player and Dungeon Master. He started playing in high school with some online friends and has been enjoying the hobby ever since. He is an avid believer in the power of putting his characters\, and his players\, in torturous and heart-wrenching situations for the sake of character growth and good storytelling. With more than a decade of DM-ing experience under his belt\, Ryan looks forward to sharing his knowledge and passion for tabletop roleplaying with all who attend. \nTo attend this event\, please register here.

SUMMARY:So\, You Wanna Be a Poet
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on freewriting (the fun part) using “prompts” to get the creative juices flowing\, followed by a framework for editing (the tear your hair out part) to reframe and fine tune your first drafts into something that can be submitted for publication with Confidence. \nWhat to bring: pens (two because it’s embarrassing when your pen runs out of ink in the middle of a workshop) a pencil (for editing) and paper I used to provide this but\, have you priced out legal pads lately?)\, your own coffee mug (full)\, *Optional* Bring some original work you may want to edit. (something you think has potential but isn’t there yet) \nWhat you will get out of it: \n1: A chance to work with a collaborative group of other writers\, supporting each other in developing your craft (as opposed to it being just you\, your laptop and a bag of chips. You know who you are!) \n2: Some interesting insight into finding inspiration and a usable creative process to generate rough drafts of poetic work. (prompts\, such as\, “Write something you would never want your mom to read”) \n3: Editing tips and techniques How to workshop a poem with others. How to comment on the poetry of others in ways that are useful\, respectful and help you to improve your own work. (Do NOT say “This poem sucks”\, unless it is a poem about a vacuum cleaner) \nPlease register for this workshop here.  \nHosted at the Connections Wellness Centre. \nAbout the presenter: \nAndrew J Burton MS Ed(FA) is an award-winning writer\, theatre artist and poet with many years of experience in a range of writing practices.
